BUT i m the boos and i cant login, it's incredible...
Is someone can help me,
thanks a lot,

Big problem from belgium after compliling my kernel
Thanks, but why ... GDM is running ???
i dont want that,.... Can you explain me...
Hi Lucy,
you can also change the settings of the gdm, so you can also log in as root, but it is not so good, becaus when you login as root you may easy damage your system. It's better to login as normal user and then if you will install some new software or administrate your system, to make an "su" in the console and do it.
good luck
Dookie

My question was : why before compiling kernel, then in my debian installation with the kernel 2.2.20, i had never seen GDM and after, without doing more than compiling, i see a window with that, i's stranger as microsoft.... ive never says to run GDM at start...
i listen to you, expert... i want to anderstand..

It might be, that the 2.2 Kernel you used lacked some kind of video support, so gdm could not start, even if it wanted to. FrameBuffer comes to mind...
After compiling and installing the 2.4 Kernel with the appropriate video support (maybe you did the inadvertantly) gdm was able to start and so it did...
But that's just a guess. I will be quite difficult to find the exact cause of such a behaviour, after the fact... In fact I assume that this was not intended beahviour but a coincidence of your configuration and hardware constellation...
