Kann ich mir aber nicht vorstellen, wieso es nicht bei VMDK klappen sollte. (?)

"raw" kann imho gar keine Snapshots (das ist ja auch der Sinn, es soll ein "dummes" Format sein). VMDK kann per se Snapshots, ist aber von Vmware und wird eher kompatibilitaetshalber denn voll unterstuetzt ("for exchanging images with that product"). qemu verwendet zum Snapshotten das eigene Format qcow bzw. qcow2.
