problem with net installation....plz help
problem with net installation....plz help
i just installed debian base system using the net install.(using net install cd)
i have a lan internet connection ,so decided to install in this way.
now, when i boot into debian after the basic system install, while doing the apt configuration ,it wont connect to any of the http or ftp websites listed by it in the menu for my region(Germany)......it always gives the same error, connection times out, cannot fetch!
please some one suggest me as to how to correct this problem.
one more big problem i have got on my hands is that ,the fedora core 4 on my system no longer boots.(before installing debian ,i had windows xp and fedora core 4 on my system.....windows still boots up and is fine!)
when i boot up in fedora it says something about SElinux and would not proceed .
please someone give me inputs about the problem!....

Hi max0,
a few questions first: what kind of network adapter is installed in your PC (model, manufactorer) ? Did you boot kernel version 2.4.27 (which is default when pressing <enter> at the very first prompt when booting off the CD) or did you boot kernel 2.6.8 (by typing in "linux26" at the first prompt)? How does your system (either Winslows or Fedora) usually gets a connection to the internet, via DHCP or a static ip address?
Kind regards, mistersixt
PS: Welcome to the German Debian Forum !

Ok, try to boot with Kernel -2.6 by using "linux26" at the boot prompt of the GRUB boot loader. Maybe kernel 2.4.27 does not recognize the ehternet adapter.

Another thing worth testing: when you reach the Debian setup menu hit CTRL-ALT-F2 - this will switch you to a new console window. Type in "ifconfig -a", do you see an interface called eth0 (below lo) ? If so the network adapter is (probably) recognized by the kernel, so do you see an eth0 interface? With CTRL-ALT-F1 you can switch back to the first console window - so therefore back to the setup menu.

thanx for your help.......
well, after spending lot of time i was able to finally install debian on my system!
the srory so far is as follows-
i tried to install with the "expert26" mode at the boot prompt.....but it gave me the error message that "via -rhine " network driver is not available......i proceeded....later again it gave me the error message saying that cdrom contains a non debian cd and installation step failed!
i decided to try the "testing" version of the netinstall cd...i think its "etch" and not sarge.....
everything went well except for the fact that grub bootloader didnt recognise windows xp on my system.(it recognised only fedora core 4)
at that step of installation, i decided to load the "LILO" boot loader instead.......and finished the installation.
now when i boot the system ,LILO directly boots the debian linux and doesnt offer me any choice for booting either windows or fedora on my system.
(i can mount the partitions containing windows and fedora in the debian after logging in)
how can i include the other two operating systems in the lilo boot menu?
i have installed gnome desktop.
but there are few problems.....
it gives the error saying "no volume control elements or devices found"
it doesnt show volume control in the toolbar.
i can play the video file from totem player....but when i go to the full screen mode ......video plays in the sluggish manner.....something like frames overlapping over each other rather than a smooth and continuous play......what could be the problem?
with regards,
max

Strange, that your via-rhine network card wasn't recognized by the kernel of Debian Sarge. What kernel version was on the etch boot cd?
But back to the new problems: LILO, you need to adjust the file /etc/lilo.conf with your favorite text editor like this (assuming your Windows partition is /dev/hdb1 - so first partition of the drive connected as slave to the first ide channel - are you with me ) :
Afterwards fire the command "lilo" as root and reboot your system, you will see a new item in the boot list by pressing the TAB key when seeing the LILO message.
Here you can find further information about lilo (Google finds tons of good sites of course): http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/lilo.htm
It is in english and also describes how to make other systems bootable.
Concerning the sound issue: become root and run "apt-get install alsa-base alsa-utils". ALSA is the advanced sound system for Linux. Usually after running this command the system tries to auto-detetect the sound card. If not run alsaconf manually. alsamixer is the tool to adjust mute, volume etc. Once your soundcard is configured properly the error message of gnome saying "...no devices found" will be gone.
Now to the video issue: what graphics adapter is installed in your system? Please post the output of "lspci". Also, become root and run "hdparm -d /dev/hda" (if your Linux system is on a different partition adjust the command accordingly), what do you see? Run also this program with the device of your DVD drive (/dev/hdc maybe ?), what do you see?
Kind regards, mistersixt.

Please follow Stirz' hint and install hdparm using "apt-get install hdparm". But first of all I think we need to fix the problem with "/var/cache/debconf/config.dat is locked by another process" : it looks like another process is using that file, probably running in the background. Easiest way is to reboot and try again "apt-get install alsa-base alsa-utils".
Kind regards, Jörg.

That you still get this "...config.dat is locked by another process" even after a reboot is veeeery strange...phew. Is there any chance for me to log into your computer from remote via ssh? Are you directly connected to the internet? Give me a chat (see signature - I am online when you see a user "mistersixt", I am offline when you see "mistersixt-away") if possible, I could help you using the screen tool where you see in realtime what I am typing...
Regards, mistersixt.
PS: I helped a lot of people already by logging in from remote, so no fear !

I've got this error-message a few weeks ago.
Maybe you can try this here:
I made a new panel in Gnome and deleted all other panel(s).
After that, in stuffed my new panel with the programs i want to have.
In the old panel(s) was a volume control button hided.
Maybe this helps...
