Joghurt,please!

Beitrag von wenheping » 15.09.2004 04:24:11

Last time i have post a question about how to input German
with my US keyboard.Thank you for your reply.I could not
reply the old message so i have to post a new message here.

Now i have done at Linux console:
# cd /usr/share/keymaps/i386/qwerty
# cp us.kmap.gz usc.kmap.gz
# gunzip usc.kmap.gz
and edit usc.kmap replace "keycode 58 = Caps_Lock" with "keycode 58 = Compose", and load it with loadkeys usc.

and i have set system's locale to de_euro before.

But when i edit a file with nano or vi, the editor could
not display the German charactor such as ä.

Now i press "Caps Lock", the little lamp on the keyboard
will not change.

Why?Shall i install some German fonts?

What does it display instead?

What do you mean? Do you mean the LED still switches from on to off, or that it does not toggle its state anymore?
The latter would be correct, as the Caps-Lock key is now the Compose key. (There is not caps-lock key anymore)

BTW: What is the output of the command "locale"?

when i press Caps Lock and then press "u" or "o" twice, i get only u or o

Now i press "Caps Lock", the little lamp on the keyboard
will not change.

Well, perfect.
(Except that the "beta" is an Eszett; they are not identical and not interchangable)

The Å ("A with ring") is a nordic letter, you get the Umlauts with Quotes:

<Compose> " A => Ä
<Compose> " a => ä etc.

Ehm, nowhere!
You press your Caps-Lock Key (which is now a compose key), followed by " (Shift-'), followed by - for example - an uppercase A to get Ä

PS: You don't have to keep Caps-lock/Compose pressed

Hi!

I think with
# apt-get install fonty
you can get a font that can display quite many chars (including ä, ö, ü, ß, €...) (the last one is supposed to be a Euro sign *lol*), think it's useful.

Bye

His problem wasn't an incorrect font; he pressed Compose A A instead of Compose " A

Now i press Caps-lock and Shift and ' and "A" and i get Ä,same as O and U
But i press Caps-lock and ' and "a" and i get "a" with a oblique line on top of it but not ä .
Why?

Another question: when i edit my file with nano, the menu of nano is in German in one of my computers, but in English in another of my computer. Both of my computers 's locale are set to "de_DE@euro". Why?

Thanks a lot!

:?: Maybe because some people want to write in languages that make use of the acute accent? There exist more diacritic marks in the western languages than umlauts...

First, make sure that LC_MESSAGES is also set to it (you can verify it with the command "locale")
Second, run dpkg-reconfigure locales (or ask your administrator to do so) and mark de_DE@euro as a locale to be generated. Of course, this requires a Debian Box
Third, they may be different versions of nano, the older one without german l10n
