Jessie installation: "No suitable video mode found"
Jessie installation: "No suitable video mode found"
Hi folks,
We've got problems to install Debian Jessie on a PC with integrated "Intel GMA 3600" graphics chip. We have tried the netinst ISO as well as the xfce4 ISO images; both we tried to boot from USB stick as well as from CD. We always get this error after having selected one of the install options offered by GRUB:
"error: no suitable video mode found"
This message is shown very quickly in the upper left corner for approx. half a second, then the screen turns black and the PC reboots.
Our investigations so far have shown that the GMA 3600 graphics chip seems to be a very problematic piece of hardware when it comes to support for Linux. Therefore we tried installing the a.m. ISO images on another PC with a different, better supported Intel graphics chip, and everything works fine and Jessie gets installed flawlessly.
However, we need to get Jessie running also on the GMA 3600 machine. Any hints available how to get this GMA 3600 beast working for installation?
TIA!

Re: Jessie installation: "No suitable video mode found"
Hey, I know this problem. I had the same problem with an older Dell Notebook. The "trick" is very easy:
Take the expert installation at the beginnig then you can choose a resolution from a short list. Here it worked fine. If you need more help, just ask again

Re: Jessie installation: "No suitable video mode found"
Unfortunately, if I select "Expert install" or "Graphic expert install" there is no such list to choose a resolution from.
On the box with the GMA 3600 it reboots immediately after selecting an option, and on the box with the working Intel chip it immediately starts the installation by showing the list with the installation steps.

Re: Jessie installation: "No suitable video mode found"
Okay....can you test an netinstallimage from wheezy? If that works you can do a dist-upgrade to jessie. If not try the expert installation with wheezy again. I think it is only problem of the installer and not for the working os.
Re: Jessie installation: "No suitable video mode found"
Wheezy netinstall works.
I suspect that the error message is spit out by GRUB...

Re: Jessie installation: "No suitable video mode found"
I don't know which programm produce this failure exactly. As I say, I had this problem with an old laptop, which won't boot any medium from Wheezy. Then I have found out that I had to choose the expert installation and then I get a small list of resolutions. Then I could install Debian.
Perhaps a problem between some graphic cards and GRUB? I don't know. So I hope you have a calm dist-upgrade. Do you know how to dist-upgrade the system?

Re: Jessie installation: "No suitable video mode found"
Did it before from Squeeze to Wheezy, so I guess it's a similar procedure. Will do some googling and look at official Debian docs before...Patsche hat geschrieben:Do you know how to dist-upgrade the system?

Re: Jessie installation: "No suitable video mode found"
I think this is misleading. Do you mean just the firmware booting from the installation image prior the installation itself? Then it's not GRUB but isolinux.maystorm hat geschrieben:after having selected one of the install options offered by GRUB:
Did you try swapping the disks? Usually there's not much hardware dependency once the system is installed (choosing "include all modules" at the initramfs-tools (re-)configuration dialog helps).maystorm hat geschrieben:Therefore we tried installing the a.m. ISO images on another PC with a different, better supported Intel graphics chip, and everything works fine and Jessie gets installed flawlessly.
As another way, you could try adding the parameters
Code: Alles auswählen
vga=normal nomodeset video=vesafb i915.modeset=0
Btw., this is a german board, as the .de domain hints. International help could be provided at forums.debian.net [1].

If universal surveillance were the answer, lots of us would have moved to the former East Germany. If surveillance cameras were the answer, camera-happy London, with something like 500,000 of them at a cost of $700 million, would be the safest city on the planet.

Lots of useful advise (...)
Sorry.
Re: Jessie installation: "No suitable video mode found"
I think this is misleading. Then it's not GRUB but isolinux.maystorm hat geschrieben:after having selected one of the install options offered by GRUB:

Graphical install
Advanced options ...
Install with speech synthesis
Did you try swapping the disks? Usually there's not much hardware dependency once the system is installed (choosing "include all modules" at the initramfs-tools (re-)configuration dialog helps).
Nein, das funktioniert leider nicht. Dasselbe Ergebnis wie mit den Standard-BootparameternAs another way, you could try adding the parametersto the (installer) kernel command line, which should enable any fallback mode I can recall. The selectable menu items should be editable after pressing <tab>.Code: Alles auswählen
vga=normal nomodeset video=vesafb i915.modeset=0
Besten Dank für die Unterstützung
Re: Jessie installation: "No suitable video mode found"
Testei a Live ISO e o sistema inicializa.
A CPU é Intel D 2500 e a VGA é Intel GMA 3600.

Re: Jessie installation: "No suitable video mode found"
